Music for Filmcontains selections from seven Rotascores -- The Godfather, The Godfather, Pt. 2, 8 1/2, The Orchestral Rehearsal, La Dolce Vita, Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard -- as performed by Riccardo Mutiand the Filarmonica della Scala. The label has released several albums dominated by the music of Italian composer Nino Rota -- The Godfather Trilogy 30th Anniversary 1, 2 & 3, Romeo & Juliet, Fellini Rota -- and this compilation draws from those earlier discs in an attempt to survey Rota 's work across two CDs. Just as Hitchcock had his Herrmann, and Spielberg has his Williams, the great Italian director Federico Fellini's composer of choice (writing music for over two-thirds of his films) was Nino Rota, an incredibly prolific author of more than 150 film scores in total (arguably the best-known of which was for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather), alongside numerous concertos, orchestral works, and an opera. Nino Rota is one of the most important composers in the history of cinema. Both popular and prolific, he wrote some of the most cherished and memorable of all film music – for The Godfather Parts I and II, The Leopard, the Zeffirelli Shakespeares, nearly all of Fellini and for more than 140 popular Italian movies. He’s Fellini’s musical muse, the Corleone family’s classically chromatic consigliere, and the potent musical potion for two star-crossed lovers. But there’s more to Nino Rota ‘s music than wine-soaked mandolins and Fellini-esque oom pah pah. Part of Rota’s charm is the dated quality of his Fellini scores.
